TV apologises over its Lenihan story 2010-01-11

TV3 has apologised to its staff over how it handled the story about finance minister Brian Lenihan's illness. Two senior managers at the station have addressed staff at meetings on the matter. At the meetings, chief executive David McRedmond and director of news Bob Hughes apologised for certain aspects of how the cancer diagnosis was handled. They said that, while they stood by the station's decision to broadcast the story on St Stephen's Day, they regretted some aspects of the coverage. TV3 has received hundreds of complaints from viewers about the story. In an email to staff, the station says it has set up a special phone line to which incoming complaints can be transferred. The email adds: "These comments will be screened, but we are not giving any guarantee of reply. "Comments will be forwarded to the appropriate department."
