At the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland National Broadcasting Conference today, Boxer DTT Chairperson Lucy Gaffney argued that Ireland must set an example for Europe in successfully rolling out digital terrestrial television in Ireland and asked could Ireland switch off analogue sooner than 2012?
utlining the changes facing Irish television users as digital terrestrial television (DTT) replaces analogue signals, she emphasised the need for a strong promotion and education campaign to be undertaken by all of the partners in the changeover to ensure a successful switch to DTT.
"Having won three commercial licences, it is now up to us at Boxer DTT along with RTE, the BCI, COMREG and the other key stakeholders, to promote digital terrestrial television in every town in the country and deliver a world class infrastructure offering compelling and relevant content choices. Ireland can and will be a showcase in Europe for successful DTT roll-out", Lucy Gaffney commented.
Explaining that the only way viewers will be able to continue to receive free-to-air channels after the switch-off of analogue, will be through a DTT signal via a set-top box, Lucy Gaffney said, "it is imperative that Free to Air and Pay TV work together to ensure as many households as possible in Ireland have access to DTT quickly. The Boxer DTT offering will be accessible, affordable and consumer friendly to ensure the transition is a seamless one." She then called for the process to start sooner and asked could the free to air service be subsidised as it has been in both the US and UK?
