Media Buyer
Jobs for Advertising media buyers are generally offered by advertising agencies and involve negotiating the purchase of advertising time or space on behalf of their clients. This may be in newspapers, magazines, television, radio or other media.
The role of a Media Buyer is to buy advertising space and time for the clients of advertising agencies. This is generally across all media, including publications, TV, radio, and outdoor advertising. The size of the advertising agency often dictates the duties of the Media Buyer. In a bigger agency, a buyer is often specialist in one medium, such as television, as opposed to the spectrum of media. The specific title of media buyer tends to be used in the bigger agencies. In the smaller and medium sized agencies, the roles of media planner and media buyer are often combined into the role of a media executive or media assistant and they would buy media across print, TV and Radio.
It is the duty of the Media Buyer to deliver an optimum campaign based on the aims and budget of the client – in doing so, the Media Buyer must apply his/her knowledge of advertising, awareness of discounts based on forward buying etc., and strong negotiation and telephone skills to the campaign, while remaining within the client’s budget.
Starting Salaries for Media Buyers usually range between EUR 19,000 and EUR 24,000 per annum, and with experience can range up to €60,000 per annum
