Graphic Designer
Graphic Designer
Graphic Designers jobs can be in a variety of companies, but primarily in design houses and print shops. A graphic designer needs to combine creative flair and artistic talent with a methodical approach and an ability to adhere to deadlines. Traditionally, the graphic designer is associated with print and packaging design, but graphic designers also work in TV, video and Multimedia.
A Graphic Designer working in print and packaging will need to have strong illustrative skills, and an in depth understanding (Creative and technical) of photography and typography.
Graphic Designers should have a patient and guiding approach to discerning the client’s requirements – therefore, good communication skills are essential to this role.
Many Irish companies require applicant designers to have a relevant university degree and to be highly proficient in the main design packages – Photoshop (Editing and integrating photographs), Illustrator (creating illustrated designs and logos), and Quark (managing the layout and appearance of all aspects of the advertisement.)
As Graphic designers work to deadlines, an ability to manage time and handle pressure is essential, particularly when working in busy print shops.
The typical career path for a Graphic designer is from Junior Graphic Designer in a print shop / design house to mid-range graphic designer (3 years) right up to Senior Graphic Designer / Art Director / Creative Director / Studio Manager at 5 years +
A Graphic Designer should develop a good portfolio of their work, reducing the amount of examples of college work as their career advances. When applying for a job, a designer should call or mail the company to ask what format they wish the CV to be in, and if emailing examples of work, the designer should first inform the company of file size and ask if this is acceptable.
Starting Salaries for Graphic Designers usually range between EUR 20,000 and EUR 25,000 per annum. Mid Range Salaries usually range from EUR 25,000 to EUR 30,000, while Senior Salaries range upwards from EUR 30,000 +
