Advertising Copywriter

Copywriter

A copywriter should familiarise him or herself with the client’s product, and then decide on how best to present it to the target market. An Advertising Copywriter must carefully consider the motivations of the target market - what it is about the product that the target audience will want. The Copywriter will create the advertising text that will be read or heard by this audience so he or she must understand the needs and sophistication of these ultimate consumers, and create persuasive wording which can be in the form of titles, body text, jingles and slogans, and can be conveyed through print, radio or TV.
Copywriters initially get the brief from the advertising agency account manager. This will state who the intended consumers are, and an outline of the product and its strengths.
The copywriter generally will work closely with an art director, creating a series of concepts till they narrow it down to a shortlist – these are then approved by the creative director, and presented to the client for final approval. Once a final choice has been made, final amendments are made to the design and the body copy is finalised. The advert is then passed to the production department for assimilation of all illustrations, photographs, and for typesetting, or in the case of radio advertising, for recording, and for television commercials, for filming.
A Copywriter will need to be versatile in their writing abilities. A range of writing styles will be called for, ranging from succinct and persuasive text to a more explanatory and literary style of writing. A copywriter must strive to be original, and therefore should be creative and capable of thinking outside of the box – once a message or style goes stale it loses all impact: A copywriter must always strive for originality, for impact.
Salaries for Advertising Copywriters usually range between EUR 20,000 and EUR 30,000 per annum.
