Advertising art directors have ultimate responsibility for the final appearance of all printed advertising material or television commercials.Together with a copywriter, the art director will work from the basis of a client’s brief to produce a number of advertising pitches in the form of storyboards. In doing so, they must decide on the style and layout of headlines / taglines, text layout and typeface, photos and illustrations, that will best convey the client’s message – and hence, sell the client’s product. To do so, the advertisement must be striking and interesting, while still managing to clearly convey the client’s message – this is the ongoing challenge of any effective creative team.
Upon a client’s review and final approval of a rough idea, the art director will then manage the whole process – the art director will compile content, approve typeface and layout, and either produce all artwork themselves or delegate this role to the graphic designers. Upon completion, it is the art director’s responsibility to carefully proof read all advertisements prior to submission to the printers.

An aspiring art director should come from a graphic design background, and have good experience in dealing with printers. The ability to manage people and projects is essential. A good art director will be efficient and be able to handle pressure and deliver projects on time, and also will have a strong creative flair, a good imagination, and an interest and understanding of various aspects of culture in order to derive inspiration and adhere to trends.
